My journey began after I gave birth to our 2nd daughter in 2008 and I knew I wanted to stay home with my children, even though I had a successful career in nursing. I left my job and started our journey towards being a single income household. It was a bit scary at first, especially with the rising prices and so many people losing their jobs, but I knew staying home was the right choice for our children. Like most families, that meant I had to find ways to save money.
In October 2009, my sister-in-law kept telling me about all the great deals and how much money she was saving by using coupons. I had tried using coupons before, but it didn’t work for me because I didn’t know how to use them effectively. I thought they were a waste of time. For example, I had no idea you could combine coupons with sale items. Just imagine all the deals I missed out on! I quickly researched and learned all I could about the best way to use coupons to get things we needed at a very low price… even free!
The one thing that really helped me see the value in couponing was thinking about them like cash. A coupon is not a piece of paper, it is money in your pocket. I learned many other tips about couponing from The Coupon Mom’s Book.
I’ve also learned how to really look for a deal on things that we normally wouldn’t be able to afford, like entertainment. It is amazing what you will find when you really start looking!
Other ways we have saved money and have thrived living on one income is cutting luxuries we didn’t need, like cable. We use the money we were spending on those extra items on things that we truly enjoy.
With everything I learned and how much money our family has saved, I felt called to help others save money on everything from food to vacations. The deals are out there and there are multiple ways to save on practically everything if you just know where to look.
